Bangladeshi photographer Golam Kasem (nickname:
Daddy) was 101 when he started using our email service.
Back then in 1994, off-line email was all that Drik had, even
though we were pioneers of the technology in Bangladesh.
The reasons for introducing email in our country and the
reasons for setting up a full fledged Internet service later
were many. It was imperative to bridge the digital divide. We
had thought of introducing computers to village schools as
part of our campaign. Shahidul remembers a girl in Sylhet
who had announced to a room full of village elders and a
few visitors from the big city, "I want the world in the palm of
my hands". It was probably a romantic notion and far
removed from the reality that she and we ourselves face. But
it represented a desire to open a doorway to a world of
information that she knew she was being denied.
In those early days we would teach members of the newly
formed Drik Email Club to obtain information from websites
using email tools such as Gofer. We went on to use fax
gateways through email, and set up simple bulletin boards.
Today we help bloggers publish news, and sell pictures and
other products online, and maintain Bangladesh's Human
Rights portal. Drik plans to set up public information kiosks
all over Bangladesh, so that the person in the street has
access to relevant information through a three year research
and IT project called "Reclaiming the Information
Commons" (2006-2009).
Having a skilled and dedicated team has also helped us
streamline our own organization. Online meetings, remote
monitoring of projects and staff activity, and collaborative
projects with a geographically scattered team would have
been impossible without our IT expertise. Providing wired
and wireless connectivity, we offer trouble-shooting
services, set up listservers and extranets and also offer IT
training. We use open source software, and have a nonhierarchical
management structure. Our mailing list with
over 22,000 subscribers forms a wider community that is
held together by our technological team.
