"We hijra are disabled in one way. We cannot give birth to children. That is why we love other people's children very much."
My name is Mukta. My father owns Jalil and Company. Mother's name is Meherunnisa. We are three sisters, and only I am hijra - a transsexual (In Mukta's case, this means she is a transsexual who has had medical and surgical treatment to alter her male sexual features so that they resemble those of a woman). I was born on 26th December, 1972. Even before I realised that I am hijra, my mother died. As I was growing up, I slowly began to find our that I am hijra.

That is why I was naturally attracted to singing and dancing. My father and step-mother did not like this at all. Also, other people of my village and classmates used to pass rude comments at me. Sometimes boys on the streets would beat me up. All this meant that my father lost his honour in the eyes of the village.
