There
are no words to the images in my books as indeed there
are times when I took no photographs. In Srebrenica
9000 men were executed during a few weeks in the summer
of 1995, I photographed one of the women, still among
the ruins. In Asia I met a labourer who had no other
choice. Her back was like concrete, just like the bridge
towering over her. The bridge to another life she could
not reach. In Pol Pot’s torture chambers, I photographed
the photographs of tortured children. Lest we forget.
These two women in a small village 30 minutes drive
outside the capital, Asmara in Eritrea, walked into
the dark clouds. I photographed strength, and a sense
of hope.
